Navratri in Varanasi: The Nine Nav Durga Temples
In Varanasi, Navratri can be experienced as a journey through the city itself. Each day honours a different form of Durga, and Kashi has a shrine associated with each of the nine forms. From the Varuna-side neighbourhood of Alai Pura to the lanes around Vishwanath, the Nav Durga yatra brings worshippers into the living geography of the city.
The sequence below follows the nine traditional forms. The neighbourhood and landmark descriptions help you locate each shrine; the map links open searches so you can check the current approach before setting out. The day refers to the festival tithi, which may not match a simple count of calendar dates every year.

Why Navratri feels different in Kashi /
Navratri, “nine nights,” is observed in more than one season; the spring Chaitra and autumn Sharadiya festivals are especially familiar. In Kashi, the observance is both domestic and public: families light lamps and recite prayers, while worshippers travel to a different goddess shrine on successive tithis. The route moves between riverfront steps, neighbourhood shrines and the great Durga Kund temple. It also reminds us that a city so closely associated with Shiva has a richly layered geography of Shakti.
Devotees may recite the Durga Saptashati, also called the Devī Māhātmya or Chandi. The name “Saptashati” refers to the traditional count of seven hundred verses. Individual customs of fasting, offerings and recitation differ by family and temple; ask locally before assuming one rule applies everywhere.
The Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa and the Goddess /
The Devī Māhātmya occupies thirteen chapters, conventionally numbered 81–93 in F. E. Pargiter’s English translation of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. Chapter numbering can differ by edition. The outer narrator is the sage Mārkaṇḍeya. Within his account, the dispossessed king Suratha encounters Samādhi, a merchant rejected by his family. Both remain attached to people and things that have hurt them. They ask the sage Medhas why knowledge alone has not freed their hearts. Medhas answers by teaching them about Mahāmāyā, the Goddess whose power shapes both perception and the world. Read chapter 81.
The narrative then unfolds through three great cycles: the episode of Madhu and Kaitabha; the manifestation of the Goddess and her victory over Mahishasura; and her contests with Shumbha, Nishumbha and their forces. The Goddess is celebrated as protection, intelligence, power and refuge, while the struggles give worshippers language for fear, confusion and renewal. These are episodes of a sacred text, not claims that the battles happened at the nine present-day Varanasi temple addresses. Read the Mahishasura episode and the concluding Shumbha–Nishumbha episode.
At the end, Suratha and Samādhi worship the Goddess. Suratha seeks the restoration of his kingdom and a future destiny as Manu; Samādhi asks for liberating knowledge. The Goddess grants each the boon he asks for. Their different requests make a memorable conclusion: the text speaks to worldly responsibilities and inner understanding alike. Read chapter 93.
Where do the nine names come from?
The familiar sequence beginning “Prathamaṃ Śailaputrī ca…” is recited in the Devī Kavacha, commonly printed before the thirteen chapters as part of the worship and recitation tradition. The Kavacha and the central thirteen-chapter Devī Māhātmya should not be confused with one another. Equally, the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa should not be presented as a street-by-street guide to the nine shrines in modern Varanasi: the local temple identification belongs to Kashi’s living pilgrimage tradition.
Sage Mārkaṇḍeya and the Varanasi connection /
The rishi who narrates the Purana is also remembered in a beloved Shiva tradition. At Markandey Mahadev in Kaithi, near the meeting of the Ganga and Gomti in Varanasi district, devotees tell how the young Mārkaṇḍeya embraced a Shiva linga when Yama came for him, and Shiva protected his devotee. This is the local association of the rishi with the Varanasi region; the temple is not one of the nine Nav Durga stops, and the Kaithi story should not be described as an event located by the Devī Māhātmya itself. Kashi portal: Markandey Mahadev · Map search.

That pairing of stories gives a thoughtful way to read Navratri in Kashi: Mārkaṇḍeya transmits the Goddess’s greatness in the Purana, while the Kaithi shrine remembers his devotion to Shiva. The connection is one of textual narration and regional sacred memory, not proof that he composed the text at Kaithi.
The nine deity photographs below illustrate the forms of Durga. They were taken outside Varanasi and do not document the listed Kashi shrines.
The nine temples and their locations /
Day 1 · Shailputri (शैलपुत्री)
English
The first form carries the memory of Sati and her rebirth as Parvati, daughter of the mountain king Himavat. A bull, trident and lotus are her familiar signs. The bull links the image to Shiva; the lotus suggests a life capable of opening even in difficult conditions. On Pratipada, a devotee may begin with a simple intention: to travel the nine days with steadiness. In Kashi the shrine is by the Varuna rather than in the main Vishwanath lanes. The Alai Pura and Marhiya Ghat landmarks help identify the approach.
Location: Shailputri temple, Alai Pura (Alaipur), near Marhiya Ghat on the Varuna river, in the Jaitpura area.

English
Brahmacharini is Parvati in the discipline of tapas, often depicted holding a rosary and a water pot. Her story is about prolonged effort, restraint and devotion. Dvitiya asks what it means to remain committed when a goal is distant; prayer here can be an invitation to patience rather than a promise of immediate reward. The shrine traditionally identified with this form is the smaller Chhoti Durga temple around Durga Ghat. Take time to walk the nearby lanes and confirm the entrance locally.
Location: Chhoti Durga / Brahmacharini temple in the Durga Ghat neighbourhood; approach through the lanes near the ghat.

English
The crescent on Chandraghanta’s forehead resembles a bell. She is commonly shown as a lion-riding, armed goddess who meets danger without surrendering compassion. Her bell can be read as a call to wakefulness: fear is acknowledged, then answered with courage. On Tritiya the busy Chowk area becomes the setting for this form of worship. The shrine is reached through a lane near Chowk police station; expect a short walk from the nearest vehicle access.
Location: Chowk, in the lane opposite the landmark near Chowk police station (often listed as CK 23/34).

English
Kushmanda is associated in devotional explanation with the first creative stir of the universe, sometimes described through the image of a cosmic egg. She is often depicted with eight arms; the imagery emphasises abundance and sustaining energy. Kashi identifies her fourth-day worship with Durga Kund, whose red temple stands beside a large tank. This is the most conspicuous architectural stop, but the prominence of the building should not obscure the distinct local practice of honouring her here on Chaturthi.
Location: Durga Kund temple, beside the kund in the Durga Kund neighbourhood.

English
Skandamata holds Skanda, also called Kartikeya, in her lap. The image joins tenderness to the power to protect: motherhood here is active, not passive. A lotus frequently appears in her iconography. Panchami worship can be approached as a meditation on care for children, family and the wider community. In Jaitpura, the shrine is situated within the Bageshwari Devi temple complex. Ask for Bageshwari if a map search for Skandamata alone does not identify the gate.
Location: within the Bageshwari Devi temple complex, Jaitpura (often listed as J 6/33).

Day 6 · Katyayani (कात्यायनी)
English
Katyayani is traditionally linked to the austerities of the sage Katyayana and represents decisive strength. In later devotional stories the gopis of Vraja also worship her, although that narrative belongs to a different setting from this Varanasi shrine. On Shashthi visitors make their way toward the Atmaveereshwar temple in the Scindia Ghat area. The riverfront view helps locate the neighbourhood; the photograph here shows the ghat and should not be mistaken for a picture of Katyayani’s image.
Location: at the Atmaveereshwar temple, in the Scindia Ghat (Shindhiya Ghat) area.
Find Katyayani temple on Maps / मानचित्र खोलेंDay 7 · Kalaratri (कालरात्रि)
English
Kalaratri has a formidable dark appearance and is often described with dishevelled hair and a donkey as her mount. The form is called auspicious despite its severity: the image turns towards the darkness that people would prefer to avoid. Saptami invites a worshipper to name fear without letting fear govern every action. Her shrine is in Kalika Gali near the Vishwanath area, where small turns in the lanes matter more than straight-line map distances.
Location: Kalika Gali, near the Kashi Vishwanath temple area (often listed as D 8/7).
Find Kalaratri temple on Maps / मानचित्र खोलेंDay 8 · Mahagauri (महागौरी)
English
Mahagauri’s serene appearance follows the severe austerities associated with Parvati. In Kashi, her eighth-day worship is identified with Annapurna, giver of food and sustenance. This local identification makes the meaning of nourishment tangible: feeding another person becomes an everyday act of reverence. The Annapurna temple lies beside the Vishwanath precinct; entry arrangements may change during festival crowds. Mahagauri here is not a reason to confuse this Nav Durga route with the separate Nava Gauri circuit.
Location: Annapurna temple precinct, beside the Kashi Vishwanath area.
Find Annapurna temple on Maps / मानचित्र खोलेंDay 9 · Siddhidatri (सिद्धिदात्री)
English
Siddhidatri is honoured at the close of the nine-form sequence as the giver of siddhis. In devotional language these are attainments, but the end of a pilgrimage can also be read as an invitation to use insight responsibly. Navami leads into Siddha Mata Gali near Bulanala and Town Hall, in the Maidagin area. After nine stops across different quarters of the city, the concluding visit gathers the journey’s themes of discipline, courage, protection, nourishment and understanding.
Location: Siddha Mata Gali, near Bulanala and Town Hall in the Maidagin area (often listed as CK 6/28).

Experiencing the yatra /
The pilgrimage is best approached at the pace of the old city. Carry water, wear comfortable footwear, and leave extra time for queues. Ghats and crowded lanes may require walking even when your map shows a nearby road. Respect each temple’s photography rules and check festival opening hours locally before travelling.
A useful distinction: These are Kashi’s Nav Durga shrines. The separate Nava Gauri pilgrimage follows a different set of nine goddess sites. Durga Kund is an important stop in this Nav Durga sequence, but the nine shrines are spread across Varanasi.
